Chemical Peels
I know chemical peels sound kind of intense, but they’re really not as scary as you might think. At our Medical spa in Grand Rapids, MI, we basically use special solutions to get rid of the old, damaged skin on top so the better stuff underneath can show through.
Think of it like this, your skin builds up layers over time from sun exposure, pollution, and just living life. A chemical peel strips away those worn-out top layers to reveal skin that looks fresher and healthier. It’s not as dramatic as it sounds.
Most people can go about their normal routine right after getting a peel, though your skin will need some extra TLC while it’s healing. The newer peels we use are way more comfortable than the harsh ones from years ago that left people looking like they got sunburned.
The whole point is getting smoother, clearer skin without having to do anything too extreme or expensive. We also offer advanced skin rejuvenation, microneedling, hair loss restoration, and wrinkle treatment/Botox if you want to tackle other issues too.
Types of Chemical Peels Available
The VI Peel is what most of our patients end up choosing because it works on almost every skin type and you don’t have to hide out at home afterward. It’s strong enough to handle sun spots and old acne marks, but you won’t look like a tomato for weeks.
The Perfect Derma Peel is another good option, especially if you want to brighten up dull skin and smooth out rough areas. It goes a little deeper than some peels but still won’t knock you out of commission for days.
If you want something really mild, we’ve got the CO2Lift Facial that uses carbon dioxide to perk up your skin. This one has basically zero downtime, so it’s perfect if you’re nervous about trying peels or if you need something gentle to help your skin recover from other treatments.
We’ll figure out which peel makes sense for you during your consultation. Everyone’s skin is different, so what works great for your friend might not be the best choice for you.
Skin Issues Chemical Peels Address
Sun damage is huge here in Michigan – we get those gorgeous summers, but all that time at the beach or working outside without enough sunscreen really shows up later. Brown spots, blotchy skin, rough patches, peels can handle most of that stuff pretty well.
Old acne scars drive people crazy because the breakouts are ancient history, but the reminders are still there making your skin look bumpy and uneven. The right peel can smooth out a lot of that texture and make those marks way less obvious.
Fine lines, especially the ones around your eyes and mouth from squinting and smiling, often get better with peels. They won’t erase deep wrinkles, but your skin definitely looks smoother and younger overall.
If your skin just looks tired and dull, like it’s lost that healthy glow you remember having, peels can bring a lot of that back. It’s amazing how much brighter and more vibrant your skin can look after getting rid of all that built-up damage.
Results You Can Expect
You’ll probably start noticing changes within a week, once your skin finishes peeling and settles down. Everything looks brighter and feels softer, and the tone becomes much more even. It’s like your skin got a fresh start.
Those annoying sun spots usually fade significantly, sometimes they disappear completely if they weren’t too deep to begin with. The bumpy, rough texture that made your skin feel old becomes much smoother and softer.
Fine lines aren’t as noticeable, and your skin gets this healthy glow that makes people ask if you’ve been on vacation or started using some new skincare routine. A lot of our patients say they can finally skip foundation because their skin looks good on its own.
The results won’t last forever since your skin keeps aging and getting exposed to sun and pollution. But if you do peels every few months, you can maintain that fresh look pretty easily. It’s like keeping up with car maintenance, regular tune-ups keep everything running smoothly.
Who Benefits from Chemical Peels
Most people with sun damage, acne scars, dullness, or early signs of aging see good results from peels. You don’t need terrible skin to benefit, sometimes people with minor issues get the biggest improvements because there’s less damage to work through.
Younger people in their 30s often use peels to prevent bigger problems from developing. Older folks usually want to fix existing damage and get back some of that glow they used to have. Both approaches work well.
Most skin types handle peels just fine, though if you have really sensitive skin or certain medical conditions, we might need to start with something gentler. Pregnant or nursing women usually wait until later to try peels.
The biggest thing is being realistic about what peels can do and actually following our aftercare instructions. If you can resist picking at your peeling skin and you’ll wear sunscreen religiously afterward, you’ll probably be really happy with how things turn out.
